Formative Architects completed the project for a client who wanted a home as well as spaces for renting to people who want to visit the island and its famous Olle Trail. Instead of one monolithic structure, the house features two angular volumes with a staircase element in the middle. The studio used red brick for the walls and roofs of the two main volumes, and gray brick for the stairs that reach three stories in height and almost seem to lead to the sky. One building houses the family home, while the other contains guest rooms which travelers can rent.
Pair it With Large Windows
The ground floor boasts red bricks in a distinctive ‘Monks bond’ pattern, while the upper floor features untreated oak cladding. The house has a thoughtful design; the first floor’s wood boards match the brick pattern, while wood paneling covers sections of the ground floor’s brick facade. Designed by Atelier Barda, this modern brick house offers a tasteful take on the traditional farmhouse design. Located in beautiful forested landscape in Quebec, Canada, the dwelling blends into the setting with a medium brown brick exterior and black gabled roof. An off-centered arch stands out on the opaque facade and marks the entrance to the house. On the side that faces the owners’ horse farm, the studio designed large windows as well as glazed walls.

Breeding a cohesive look, we complemented the symmetrical windows and bay windows on both sides of the doorway with mounted light fixtures on each column. Here, we focused on creating a moody look for this traditional house with deep green siding, natural materials, and black accents. While the existing exterior was light and neutral, this client was after something deeper and more daring. The striking new exterior made way for more outdoor living spaces to enjoy the updates. We added seating and dining areas to the deck, which leads down to a cozy fire pit space. Inspired by traditional Czech houses, this extension features an exposed brick exterior in a darker color.

This is the latest roundup in our Dezeen Lookbooks series that provide visual inspiration for designers and design enthusiasts. The white pavers over dark mulch leading to this home’s wide front steps brought much of the modern feel to this update. A popular way to create a more contemporary feel with brickwork is to use a vertically stacked laying pattern as opposed to the more commonly seen horizontal bonds — or, even better, to combine the two. Then there is the bond in which the bricks are laid, as well as their shape. Stack bond, made up of rows of stretchers with each stretcher centred on the stretcher below it, looks very neat and modern. For something more unusual 3D effects can be created by laying bricks at various protruding angles, and a basketweave pattern (a little like herringbone) can look very striking too. This tends to have more to do with the style and how they are formed rather than the material they are made from.
